2006 Sustainable Building Design Competition
As Friday's energy prices reached an all time high, students from the Appalachian State University, Department of Technology were preparing for a state wide competition which implemented ways of saying energy costs in home construction and operation expenses. The students were designing a 1200 square foot house using the latest in building science technology research and developments.
Orientation of the house was studied to make sure all spring and summer breezes were accounted for and that cold winds of winter were diverted away from important openings. The designs incorporated proper place of windows for gathering sunshine in the winter and shading the windows during the harsher days of summer sunshine, overhangs and screening devices to protect the south and west walls during summer, and proper placement of windows to allow for cross breezes during the warmer months. The roofs and walls were designed to protect the home from cool temperatures by using state of the art insulation and wall insulating systems.
Three winners for Appalachian State University represented the Department of Technology at the State Wide Competition in Raleigh , North Carolina . Appalachian State won two of the top five offerings, with an honorable mention going to the team of Jeff Smith, Brandon Smith, Zach Robinson, Nick Luffman, and Ashley Sloan. The team of Matt Sands, Nikki Rezvani, Beth Ainsworth, Walker Massey and Adrian Tait won in the Founders Award by designing a house with the most innovative new building system.

The North Carolina Sustainable Building Design Competition [NCSBDC] is a program to engage students in the state's universities and community colleges to learn and apply the lessons of sustainable design and construction.
Student teams design a home for a particular region in North Carolina incorporating a sustainable approach to design that includes energy efficiency, renewable energy, water conservation, indoor air quality, universal design, use of locally available materials, attention to the particular assets of the site, and more.
By participating in this program, all students become better prepared to incorporate sustainable design methods into their work and to bring this experience to the design and construction professions.
